In February 2016, 47 Cheltenham Choir students and 5 adults traveled to Puerto Rico for an extraordinary performance tour. Here’s a video from our wonderful time in Puerto Rico.

We were greeted particularly warmly by our singing colleagues at Ponce High School, who performed for us, fed us a homemade dinner at their school, and reached out to all our Cheltenham singers with open arms.

Find out more about Puerto Rico from our Select Choir President, Erin Kuchler.

CHS and Ponce High School singers in the courtyard of their school after a magnificent joint concert and a delicious homemade dinner.

In the wake of Hurricane Maria, we are reaching out to assist our colleagues in Ponce. Many are still without clothes, water, and food, and the school is spearheading efforts to rebuild its students’ homes.

PMEA District Chorus Festival! Music available now

Each year, CHS sends several motivated singers to audition for the PMEA District Choral Festival. The experience is open to 10th-12th graders, and those in Select Choir have class time to prepare for the audition.

Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA)

organizes a yearly series of High School Chorus Festivals that bring together students from various school districts in our area, region, and state. Students learn a full concert program of music, rehearse it with a guest conductor, and perform a concert at the end of the three-day festival. Each festival is auditioned. Students who are accepted into the District Festival in late January may have scores that qualify them for the Regional Chorus Festival in early March; scores at Regionals can qualify students for the All-State Festival in April.

Preliminary auditions of CHS students will be held at school in October. The CHS audition and the first PMEA audition consist of sight-singing and performing an excerpt of your vocal part in two assigned pieces. If you qualify for the District festival, the next official audition, on the first day of the festival in January, tests your preparation and performance on all 6-8 of the festival pieces. That audition can also qualify you for Regionals.

Here’s the rundown of District Chorus events:

  • October 2017, after school:  In-House Auditions for Cheltenham’s District Chorus Candidates, CHS Choir Room
  • Sat, Nov 18, 2017:  PMEA District 11 Chorus Auditions at Upper Merion High School
  • Th-Sat, Jan 25-27, 2018:  PMEA District 11 Chorus Festival

Auditioning for PMEA District Chorus is a great opportunity for motivated musicians who want more experience learning new music, sight-singing, auditioning, and performing!

Here are the two audition pieces for 2017-18.

Audition Piece #1: “O Sing Joyfully” by Adrian Batten [pdf] (from the Renaissance Era)

Audition Piece #2: “Laudate Pueri” by W.A. Mozart [pdf]  (from the Classical Era)

Dr. Craig Arnold conducting Luther College’s Nordic Choir.

In the audition, you’ll be given a starting pitch, then you’ll sing from a chosen point, a cappella, for about 10-25 measures. You’ll be evaluated on pitch, rhythm, vocal tone, and dynamics/articulation. The audition will also consist of one sight-singing excerpt. You’ll be given a starting pitch, 30 seconds to study, then a starting pitch again.

For more details on the audition process, see this document.

For sight-singing practice, use Sight Reading Factory or Practice First on your MusicFirst account. If you’re interested in auditioning for District Chorus in November, have fun studying the Batten and Mozart!!

The 2017 North Penn Choral Invitational Concert will include performances by choirs from North Penn, Quakertown Community, and Lower Merion High Schools. Each ensemble will perform three pieces. CHS Choir Members Attend Mendelssohn Club Concert featuring composer Dr. Ysaye Barnwell

Sunday, February 26, 40 Cheltenham Choir students attended an outstanding performance by the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Philadelphia. The concert, led by Dr. Paul Rardin of Temple University, featured the work of Dr. Ysaye Barnwell. Dr. Barnwell is a highly renowned singer, composer, arranger, song-leader, and former member of Sweet Honey in the Rock, an African-American women’s a cappella group.

Dr. Barnwell headshot.jpegAt Sunday’s performance, Dr. Barnwell discussed her work and led the audience in singing three different four-part songs which she taught by rote throughout the concert. Cheltenham singers were active participants and had a wonderful time.  The concert, entitled “Big Sing: American Stories,” featured the Mendelssohn Club performing four of Barnwell’s own compositions, along with folk songs and spirituals. The program also included Afro-American Fragments, a lovely setting of Langston Hughes poems by William Averitt, who was also in attendance at the concert.

In December, all Cheltenham singers performed Dr. Barnwell’s “Hope,” and in May, our Concert Choir will perform her piece entitled “Breaths.” We were honored to get to meet her in person!

Congratulations to Mikayla Stone, participant in PMEA Region Chorus Festival

This weekend, CHS senior Mikayla Stone participated in the three-day PMEA Region VI Chorus Festival at Strath Haven High School, singing alongside 159 other outstanding musicians selected from across Bucks, Montgomery, Philadelphia, Delaware, and Chester counties. On Saturday, February 25, Mikayla and her colleagues performed an outstanding concert featuring Lauridsen’s “Lux Aeterna” and Tarik O’Regan’s “Triptych,” under the direction of University of Delaware Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Paul Head.

Congratulations to Mikayla on this impressive achievement!
