Vocal Showcase Tonight! Wed, May 30, 7:00pm, Cafeteria

Please join us for our annual Vocal Showcase, tonight, Wed, May 30, at 7:00 pm, in the cafeteria!! The evening will feature fantastic performances by Up the Octave and Sons of Pitch, plus several solos, duets, and trios from seniors in our choir program.

The event is free. The room is air-conditioned. And refreshments will be provided, courtesy of a cappella group members. Enjoy all these things plus some fantastic music from our CHS musicians.

Tiffin Restaurant Night Tuesday, May 22

Hello, Cheltenham Choir friends and families!

Tiffin in Elkins Park at 8080 Old York Road, Elkins Park, PA has been generous enough to donate 10% of their profits to the CHS Vocal Arts program! All you need to do is order from Tiffin this Tuesday between 11:00 AM and 10:00 PM to eat some delicious Indian Cuisine, mention CHS Choirs when you order, and 10% of your meal’s cost will be donated to our program! Orders can be delivery, takeout, or dine in.

Spring Choir Concert Saturday, May 12

Our choir students are looking forward to our final concert of the year, Saturday, May 12, at 4:00 pm in Stretton Hall!

Students are called to Stretton Hall by 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 12 for a pre-concert dress rehearsal. Students: please arrive very comfortably before 1:00 and check in with your President. Punctuality is very important. (See lateness policies.) Also, please bring a water bottle and a snack. Concert attire, detailed here, is the same as usual.The concert will conclude around 5:30 pm.

Immediately following the concert, please join us for a celebratory picnic on the CHS front lawn (rain location: CHS cafeteria). All students and families are invited to attend.

Our CHS VPA Boosters will provide hoagies and pizza. Each choir member is asked to contribute one item to share.

  • Women’s and Men’s Choir: drinks
  • Concert Choir: dessert
  • Select Choir: side dish/snack/salad

Please bring blankets and lawn chairs, as well as outdoor activities, if you like. If you are able to lend a cooler, ice, or folding table, that would be a great help. Please contact Emily Reich, the VPA hospitality chair, with questions about/contributions to the picnic.

This will be a wonderful way to conclude our year’s work in choir. Looking forward to seeing you all Saturday the 12th!

Schubert Mass in G Tonight at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral!

We warmly invite you all to attend a wonderful collaborative concert tonight, Thursday, February 22, at 7:30 pm, at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral. The concert features a performance of Franz Schubert’s entire Mass in G by our Select Choir, our CHS Chamber Orchestra (under the direction of Mr. Matt Hoy), and CHS Choir alumni Robert Balfour-Austin ’17, Willa Douglas ’16, and Thomas Kuchler ’12 as soloists. The concert will also include selections of choir-only and orchestra-only repertoire.

The concert begins at 7:30pm and will conclude around 8:30. It is free, non-ticketed, and open to the public.

The Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral, an outstanding performance space, is in University City, at 38th and Chestnut. The address is 23 S 38th St, Philadelphia, PA 19104 There are many metered parking places near the Cathedral, especially on Chestnut, 38th, Ludlow, and Market Streets, and there are paid parking lots nearby, as well. The Cathedral is also readily accessible by public transit. Location details are here.

District-Wide Tour Friday, January 19, 2018

This Friday, January 19, our vocal groups will entertain their fellow students on our 7th Annual Cheltenham School District Tour of elementary and middle schools!

Select Choir, Touring Ensemble, Up the Octave, and Sons of Pitch will perform for five district schools plus the district staff and administration.

We will meet in the choir room at 8:20 am and return to CHS around 4:00 pm.

Select Choir, TE, UTO, and Sons Members:

  • Please be sure you’ve blocked off all day up to 4:00.
  • Talk to your teachers about making up the work in your missed classes. Complete your work promptly.
  • Bring a lunch and a water bottle, plus snacks if you like. We’ll eat lunch at the Admin Building around 1:00.
  • REQUIRED ATTIRE is dark blue jeans and a nice looking, black top (long-sleeved is best). Your shoes should look decent. (TE: make sure they’re shoes and jeans you can dance in!) Proper attire is required to go on the trip.

Many thanks to our district administration and our building principals for welcoming us into their schools again this year. It’s going to be a fun day!

Restaurant Night this Monday, December 18, at Jules Pizza and U-Swirl

This Monday, December 18, please enjoy a delicious dinner and dessert at Jules Thin Crust Pizza and U-Swirl Frozen Yogurt at 817 Old York Rd in Jenkintown. 20% of all proceeds will go to support our Vocal Arts programs!

 

Important Info for Winter Choir Concert Wed, Dec 6

Our students are looking forward to sharing their music at our Winter Choir Concert on Wednesday, December 6, at 7:30 pm, in Stretton Hall!

During school on Tuesday, December 5, all choir students will spend 1st-3rd periods rehearsing together in Stretton Hall. (Students may wear regular school clothes.) Students are responsible for making up missed work from their 1st-3rd period classes.

Wednesday, December 6, all choir students are required to be in Stretton Hall, dressed in concert attire, comfortably before 6:00 pm.

Our course expectations documents have reminders of performance requirements and policies. Significant points are deducted for even one minute of lateness, and proper concert attire is required in order to perform.

The concert begins at 7:30 pm and will last till about 9:15 pm, including a 15-minute intermission.

After the concert, all are invited to a cookie reception in the cafeteria.

Choir families are asked to contribute one plate/tray/box/bag of cookies to the reception. On Dec 6, cookies may be dropped off in the choir room in the afternoon or the cafeteria in the evening.

Pancake Breakfast at Applebee’s Jenkintown Saturday, November 4!

Choir students and families are gearing up for our 3rd Pancake Breakfast fundraiser! The event is at Applebee’s Jenkintown Saturday, November 4, 8am-10am.

Just $8 gets you unlimited pancakes, link sausage, and coffee/tea/soda. For children 5 and under, tickets are only $5.

In February 2016, 47 Cheltenham Choir students and 5 adults traveled to Puerto Rico for an extraordinary performance tour. Here’s a video from our wonderful time in Puerto Rico.

We were greeted particularly warmly by our singing colleagues at Ponce High School, who performed for us, fed us a homemade dinner at their school, and reached out to all our Cheltenham singers with open arms.

In the wake of Hurricane Maria, we are reaching out to assist our colleagues in Ponce. Many are still without clothes, water, and food, and the school is spearheading efforts to rebuild its students’ homes.

CHS Choir Car Wash Sat, October 14!

 

Please join us for the CHS Choir Car Wash this Saturday, Oct 14!

We’ll be open for business 9a-1p at the front flagpole entrance of CHS.

We are asking that each choir member sell 3 tickets. Tickets were distributed to to students last week, and more tickets are available in the choir room.

Volunteer shifts on Saturday are 8a-10a, 10a-12p, and 12p-2p. Students will sign up for particular duties and shifts this week in class. All choir student and parent volunteers are welcome.

Please join the efforts to publicize and/or patronize this fun and valuable fundraiser. Thanks to all!

Touring Ensemble Show this Sunday, October 8, 2pm!!

This Sunday, October 8, join the CHS Touring Ensemble for its annual debut show, at 2:00 pm, in Stretton Hall!

Our fantastic show choir performs varied, energetic song-and-dance numbers with instrumental accompaniment. Touring Ensemble’s 2017-18 show, The Heat is On, features songs ranging from Stevie Wonder to Adele, from Earth Wind & Fire to La La Land. Immediately following the show, this year’s CHS musical will be announced!

Seating is general admission, and tickets are sold at the door; $3 for students and $5 for adults.

Students must be in their seats comfortably before 1:00 pm (plan on 12:30-12:45), for our dress rehearsal. Reminder: Students should bring a water bottle and snack. See concert attire page for required attire. The concert begins at 4:00 and will conclude around 5:30pm.

Due to the weather forecast, we will have the post-concert “picnic” inside, in the CHS cafeteria. As a reminder, here are the potluck assignments:

Select Choir Performance Tue, Feb 28, 7:30 pm

CHS’s Select Choir will join other distinguished high school choirs to perform at North Penn High School’s Invitational Concert Tuesday, February 28, at 7:30 pm!

The 2017 North Penn Choral Invitational Concert will include performances by choirs from North Penn, Quakertown Community, and Lower Merion High Schools. Each ensemble will perform three pieces. The concert is adjudicated; Dr. Amelia Garbisch of Bloomsburg University and Dr. Kathleen Shannon, formerly of West Virginia University, will offer each choir valuable feedback about its performance.

Select Choir students will board the bus to North Penn at 5:15 pm. The concert will begin at 7:30. After attending a brief post-concert reception, we should be back at CHS around 10:15.

This is a fantastic opportunity for Select Choir students to hear other high school choirs perform and to receive comments on their own work!

Again, the concert begins at 7:30 pm at North Penn High School, 1340 S Valley Forge Rd, Lansdale, PA 19446, Tuesday, February 28. Admission is free. I hope you can come support our CHS singers!

CHS Singers perform at Temple’s ManChoir event this Saturday, January 28

We are proud to have CHS singers represent Cheltenham High School at Temple University’s ManChoir festival Saturday, January 28!

This Saturday, several of our tenors and basses will join over 100 other male singers for a full day of rehearsals and workshops. At 5:00 pm, they will present a concert at Temple’s Performing Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public. 

The 5:00 performance will feature the Festival Choir, alongside Keystone State Boychoir (with many more CHS singers!), Temple’s Concert Choir, and Temple’s male a cappella group, Broad Street Line. It is always an excellent concert!
