Districts Audition Material/Select Choir Rep 2014-15

Greetings, members of Cheltenham Choirs, 2014-15!

The PMEA District Chorus Festival is an exciting opportunity open to CHS singers in grades 10-12, by audition. The festival itself, which is January 22-24 next year, includes students from many area schools, who work with a well-known guest conductor for two days, then perform a concert. It is a great time! PMEA District Chorus Auditions for next year will be Monday, November 3, after school at CHS (for CHS students only), and Saturday, November 22, at Upper Merion High School, for all auditionees from various schools.

The audition consists of sight-reading and singing an excerpt from one of two pieces, which you prepare in advance. The two audition pieces this year are: Vittoria’s “O Magnum Mysterium” (pdf), a Renaissance piece in Latin; and Mendelssohn’s “How Lovely Are The Messengers” (pdf) (from his oratorio St. Paul), a Romantic Era piece sung in English. All Select Choir students will learn both pieces, and you will be tested on them in class in September and October.

For Select Choir students–and other 10th-12th graders interested in auditioning–here are some resources to help you study:

Vittoria: The Sixteen performing “O Magnum Mysterium,” with scrolling score (1 half-step down from where you’ll sing it)

Vittoria: Links like this, that highlight each individual part, may be helpful to you, too.

Mendelssohn: Westminster Choir College Choir performing “How Lovely are the Messengers”

Mendelssohn: Links to part study files (many other similar ones available…)

Feel free to prep and study over the summer!! Singing is fun.
