Honor Choir Opportunities for Interested Singers!

Would you like to sing in a choir outside of Cheltenham for a few days? with other people who love singing choral music? in a different city? with a well-known, experienced conductor?

Sound like fun?!? (It is!) There are two opportunities that you may want to pursue.

1. Pennsylvania American Choral Director’s Association (PA ACDA) Summer Conference Honor ChoirsAugust 6-7, 2011, at Penn State in State College, PA.

Deadline for paperwork to be submitted to Ms. Hutton is Monday, May 16.

This ACDA-PA Summer Conference has two intergenerational honor choirs open to high school, college, and community choir singers. (Graduating seniors, you are eligible, as well!) The SSAA choir for treble voices will be conducted by Dr. Mary Goetze, and the TTBB choir for lower voices will be conducted by Dr. Ethan Sperry. The two choirs will combine for two SATB pieces. Rehearsals are Saturday, August 6-Sunday, August 7, and a concert on Sunday concludes the event.

To apply:

  1. Now: Talk to Ms. Hutton about your interest in participating. Complete the PA-ACDA Summer Singer Application Form and return it to Ms. Hutton by Monday, May 16.
  2. Asap, after you speak with Ms. Hutton and submit the application: pay a $125 festival fee, which includes music, three meals, snacks/water, conductor, accompanist, and facilities use. Ideally, this should be submitted by June 1.
  3. By about June 1: pay for lodging in State College, PA for Saturday night, August 6. With four students per room, it should be about $25 per student. (With fewer students per room, it will cost more.)
  4. By about June 1: complete a PA ACDA Medical Release Form.
  • There are no formal auditions for this honor choir. Singers partcipate based on their director’s recommendation.
  • Note: If you are interested in music education as a career, you might consider staying an extra day for the ACDA Conference’s Future Music Educators Day for High School Students, Monday August 8, 9:15am-5:00 pm.
  • Ms. Hutton will be attending the conference with any CHS students who apply. Please contact her if you have questions about arrangements.
2. ACDA Eastern Division Conference Honor Choirs, February 15-18, 2012, Providence, RI

Current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders may apply for the High School Honor Choir, conducted by Dr. Pearl Shangkuan.
Current 10th and 11th graders may choose to apply for the Latino Repertoire Honor Choir, as well. That choir will include college students and adults and will be conducted by Dr. Juan Tony Guzman.
Honor Choirs at regional ACDA Conferences require a selective audition process. The audition involves recording yourself singing a scale, “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” and a solo song. (Ms. Hutton will assist with this process.) There is a $30 non-refundable application fee. The deadline for submission in June 15, which means you’d need to have your application (recordings) completed by June 10.
If you are selected, you will be committed to learning a full concert program of music on your own (with assistance from Ms. Hutton) as well as making up work from three missed school days in February. The fee for the conference is $275, plus hotel expenses. Please read all the details very carefully before you decide if you’d like to apply.
This is a tremendously exciting opportunity suited for the most motivated, skilled, and hard-working singers of Cheltenham High School! If you are interested in pursuing this opportunity, please talk to Ms. Hutton asap.
Ms. Hutton will be attending the ACDA Eastern Division Conference with any CHS students who participate in the ACDA Eastern Honor Choir(s). Please contact her if you have questions about arrangements.
